The study of movement...

Today in Digital Photography, we were supposed to spend the 2nd half of the class outside, but oh wait the weather in Italy decided it was a good day to have a complete thunderstorm (and after living in washington state for 2 years, seeing people freak out, wear ponchos, and use tons of umbrellas even when it is just DRIZZLING seems a tad ridiculous and really cracks me up!)
... so instead of being outside we went underground by a train station to take photos. My teacher told us that we could do whatever we wanted to do, and since I haven't really worked too much with capturing movement, I decided to focus on that. Here were my results...

In this photo, I took 8 still pictures one right after another, and pieced them all together...

Here are just stills... Before I took pictures of the homeless man, I went up to him and asked if I could photograph him and when he said yes, I gave him 1 euro. It's not a lot, but at least I asked...

When playing with shutter speed and capturing movement, you have to be super still otherwise the entire picture will turn out blurry rather than just certain moving objects... On a daily basis, I walk into walls, trip over myself, and find random bruises on my body from bumping into things so let me be the first to tell you how unsteady my hands can be... Anyway, I took most of the pictures with the camera on the ground to steady it. People were looking at me funny, but then most realized that I had a camera and I wasn't just randomly sitting on the ground. And yes, Nana, I did use purell after I got off the floor, don't worry. A woman came up behind me and asked me if I was crazy. When I turned around she repeated herself and then asked me if I spoke English and when I said yes, she asked me again if I was crazy. (Am I crazy?? Heck yes I am!! I'm an art student, of course I'm crazy. It's in the job description!! At least I wasn't running around the train station naked with paint all over my body...not that I would do that, but I'm just saying at least I wasn't doing that, I was just taking pictures...) I told her that I wasn't crazy and that I'm a student taking a photography class documenting movement. She looked at me funny, so I showed her some pictures that I took. She then smiled and said "Ciao!" and then walked away. Who knows what that was about, but I was pretty amused by that... I'm proud to be crazy... it makes life interesting and fun!!
